Expansion n°1, exhibited at the Donjon de Vez, is part of César’s “Expansions” series, created in 1967. Using polyurethane, a material with unique properties, this sculpture monumentalizes organic forms that appear both frozen and in motion.

Between softness and roughness
In Expansion n°1, the work’s massive, round form contrasts with the rough, rusty texture of its surface. This paradoxical piece combines the apparent softness of its form with the hardness of the material, a tension characteristic of César’s sculptures. Here, the artist explores the infinite possibilities of polyurethane, whose casting, layering and finishing give the work a quality that is both fixed and alive.
